Grade 5

M.5.Q.NF.7PriorityThe step right before this one: dividing with a unit fraction, using the same fraction models and equations. Grade 6 takes away the "unit" limit.Apply and extend previous understandings of division to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions using fraction models and equations to represent the problem.M.5.Q.NF.4PriorityA quotient is checked by multiplying back, and the rule for dividing fractions comes out of fraction multiplication, so a student needs this to make sense of either.Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to efficiently, flexibly, and accurately multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.M.5.Q.NF.3PriorityReading a fraction as division is what lets a quotient be written and understood as one number.Interpret a fraction as division, where a quantity (the numerator) is divided into equal parts (the denominator). Flexibly and efficiently solve real world word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Assess the reasonableness of answers using estimation strategies. For example, interpret 3/4 as the result of dividing 3 by 4, noting that 3/4 multiplied by 4 equals 3, and that when 3 wholes are shared equally among 4 people each person has a share of size 3/4. If 9 people want to share a 50-pound sack of rice equally by weight, how many pounds of rice should each person get? Between what two whole numbers does your answer lie?

PRISM's read

OSPI lists every item on its own focused block here, so expect computing a quotient, reading a division expression as a story or a fraction model, and two items that ask for more than the procedure.

Smarter Balanced target

Claim 1 (Concepts and Procedures), Target B: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions.

Major work of the grade, DOK 1, 2.
